Synchronous Fireflies Display (GSMNP)

calendar_todayMay 20-27, 2026 · Evening location_onGreat Smoky Mountains NP

About This Event

One of only a few places on Earth where fireflies synchronize their flashing patterns. Thousands of Photinus carolinus fireflies blink in unison across the Elkmont area of Great Smoky Mountains National Park during a brief window in late May to early June. Access is managed via a competitive lottery on Recreation.gov that typically opens in late April - demand far exceeds supply.

tips_and_updates Vantage Insider Tip

Enter the Recreation.gov lottery as soon as it opens in late April - passes sell out instantly. Shuttle buses run from Sugarlands Visitor Center to the Elkmont viewing area. Arrive at dusk, bring a blanket, and prepare for one of nature's most magical displays. Red-filtered flashlights only.
