Gatlinburg Arts And Crafts Community at a Glance

The Gatlinburg Arts and Crafts Community is the largest independent organization of artisans in the United States. Established in 1937 when local craftsmen decided to move their shops away from the busy downtown area, this unique community is set along an 8-mile, two-lane loop in a traditional rural Appalachian setting. It features over 100 artists and craftsmen who preserve and showcase traditional Appalachian arts and crafts, as well as contemporary masterpieces.

Visitors to the community can explore a wide variety of handmade goods, including pottery, wood carvings, hand-woven baskets, quilts, leather goods, jewelry, and paintings. The artisans often demonstrate their skills in real-time, allowing visitors to watch the creative process and interact with the makers. The community is not just about shopping; it's a cultural experience that offers a glimpse into the rich heritage of the Smoky Mountains.

In addition to the incredible array of shops and galleries, the Gatlinburg Arts and Crafts Community is home to numerous locally owned restaurants, cafes, and specialty food shops. The area is divided into several clusters, such as Morning Mist Village and The Glades Center, making it easy to explore different sections. With its slower pace, free parking, and dedicated trolley route, the community provides a relaxing and enriching alternative to the bustling downtown Gatlinburg scene.
