Gatlinburg Adventure Mining brings a classic Smoky Mountain activity indoors and into the middle of downtown. Set up to feel like an underground mine, it lets kids and grown-ups get their hands dirty and leave with real rocks, crystals and fossils from around the world. Gatlinburg's tourism office has highlighted it among the town's recent openings, and it is a welcome option on a hot or rainy afternoon.
Everything starts with a bucket. The $20 Gem Hunt holds gemstones and crystal clusters, the $35 Fossil Find adds shark teeth, fossils and arrowheads, and the $50 Adventure Bucket mixes gems and fossils. For bigger hauls, the $70 Strike Rich includes fool's gold and rarer gem varieties, and the $110 Mother Lode is a mix of everything plus special gems. Pour your bucket into a screen, wash away the sand and sort through what is left. Everything you find is yours to keep.
The mine is inside The Escape Game building at 105 Reagan Drive, across from Ripley's Believe It or Not on the Parkway. It is open daily from 10 AM to 8 PM and is fully air conditioned. A visit usually takes 15 to 20 minutes, so it fits easily between other downtown stops. Use one of the flat-rate parking lots along the Parkway and walk over.
