About

Founded in 1783 and named after the United States' first First Lady Martha Dandridge Washington, Dandridge has always been a small reminder of America's past. The town features Shephard's Inn where Presidents James K. Polk, Andrew Jackson, and Andrew Johnson all stayed. The Revolutionary War Graveyard at the original site of Hopewell Presbyterian Church (ca. 1785) contains graves of early citizens and veterans. The Million Dollar Dike saved the town from flooding when Douglas Lake was enlarged for Oak Ridge power during WWII. Today, downtown Dandridge offers unique shops, restaurants, and historic charm as the second-oldest and most beautiful town in Tennessee.
