About

Scotty Bike Townsend makes it easy to see Cades Cove and Townsend from the saddle without worrying about the hills. The family of riders who might never tackle the 11-mile Cades Cove Loop on a standard bike can do it comfortably on an electric one, taking time for mountain views and wildlife along the way. Closer to the shop, the Townsend greenway links local shops, coffee spots, eateries, distilleries, pubs and wineries.

The e-bikes are set up for touring, with mirrors, cell phone holders, bells and rear cargo racks with bags. Communication helmets let riders talk to one another as they go, and the average battery range of 30 to 35 miles covers the full loop and more. Cargo e-bikes carry a couple of young children plus gear. Rentals are offered by the hour or by the day, and add-ons include extra helmets, child seats and bike racks.

The shop is at 7321 East Lamar Alexander Parkway in Townsend. E-bikes cannot be ridden from the shop to Cades Cove, and the shop is not permitted to deliver into the Cove, so rent a rack for one to four bikes (a 2-inch hitch receiver is required) or load bikes into a pickup. Riders must be at least 16 to operate an e-bike. Book online, and reserve early for Wednesdays, when Cades Cove closes to cars and rentals sell out.
