Smoky Mountain Skydive, the dropzone many locals still know as Skydive East Tennessee, offers the one way to see the Great Smoky Mountains that no overlook can match. The center describes itself as the Smoky Mountains' only skydiving center, and it operates as a USPA member dropzone in the farm country of New Market, a short drive north of Sevierville and Pigeon Forge. For guests celebrating a birthday, a milestone or simply a long-held wish, it is a memorable addition to a cabin stay.
First-time jumpers fly tandem, strapped to a certified instructor who handles the parachute. The standard tandem exits at 10,500 feet, followed by 30 to 35 seconds of freefall at around 120 mph and a canopy ride of about five minutes with the mountains spread across the horizon. A premium 14,000-foot jump adds more freefall time. Video packages with ultra HD footage and high-resolution photos are available, and groups of five or more receive a discount.
Jumpers must be at least 18, weigh under 220 pounds, carry a valid government-issued photo ID and arrive free of drugs and alcohol. Wear soft-soled closed-toe shoes and comfortable, stretchy clothing, tie back long hair, and plan to spend one to three hours on site, since weather can cause delays. Reservations are made online with a deposit; cancellations 48 hours or more ahead receive a full refund, and weather cancellations can be rescheduled.
