The Smokies have a long tradition of roadside attractions that make you pull over and say, wait, that exists? Some are delightfully small, some are hands-on, and a couple are worth a short drive out of town, but every one on this list gives a big group a story to retell back at the cabin that night.
We kept to places with a real hook: a museum devoted to one tiny object, a mini golf course you ride a railway to reach, a hike with your own llama and a range where adults can drive a tank. Check hours before you go, since several are small operations.

Salt & Pepper Shaker Museum
Billing itself as the world's only salt and pepper shaker museum, this Gatlinburg stop displays more than 20,000 sets from around the world, some dating to the 1500s, plus about 1,500 pepper mills. The founders, a former archaeologist and her husband, also run a sister museum in Spain and treat the collection as history as much as kitsch.
Good to know: Kids 12 and under free; adult admission counts toward a shop purchase.
Closest Vantage cabins: Greystone (5-10 min), Gatlinburg Heights (5-10 min)
View Full Guide →Goats on the Roof
The name is literal: live goats graze on the roof, and visitors send feed up to them on the goat-cycle conveyor. Around the goats you will find the Goat Coaster, nearly a mile of track at up to 30 mph, 36 holes of animated dinosaur mini golf, gem mining and a sweet shop with fudge and ice cream.
Good to know: About 2.5 miles down Wears Valley Road from Parkway light #3.
Closest Vantage cabins: Paradise Pool Lodge (10-15 min), Pigeon Forge Getaway (10-15 min)
View Full Guide →Ancient Lore Village
Ancient Lore Village is a storybook fantasy village built around author Tom Boyd's tales, with themed dwellings like the Gremlin Den, Orc Home, Leprechaun Lair and Fairy Cottage. Day passes add archery, axe throwing, trails and character-led tours with storytelling. It sits 15 minutes from downtown Knoxville and about 30 minutes from Pigeon Forge.
Good to know: Visit on a Day Pass unless you're staying overnight; check dates online.
Closest Vantage cabins: Wheatlands Plantation (25-30 min), Serenity Mountain Pool Lodge (35-45 min)
View Full Guide →Smoky Mountain Llama Treks
At Smoky Mountain Llama Treks, every hiker gets a professionally trained llama as a personal trail buddy for a walk through the woods at the Llama Treks farm in the Cosby foothills. The Padgett Mill Trek comes in short and extended versions, a shorter llama farm visit is also offered, and hikers from 5 to 100 have made the trip.
Good to know: Reservations are required; book online before driving out to Cosby.
Closest Vantage cabins: Creekside Splash (25-30 min), Splash Mountain Lodge (25-30 min)
View Full Guide →Hillbilly Golf
Hillbilly Golf bills itself as the world's most unusual miniature golf, and the trip up makes the case: an incline railway lifts players about 300 feet above the city to two 18-hole courses built into the mountainside, lined with mountaineer-themed hazards. It has been operating for more than 50 years.
Good to know: The incline car holds 8-12 people; big groups ride up in waves.
Closest Vantage cabins: Greystone (5-10 min), Gatlinburg Heights (5-10 min)
View Full Guide →Ripley's Believe It or Not!
Ripley's is the granddaddy of the weird-museum genre, and the Gatlinburg location packs hundreds of strange-but-true artifacts, interactive games and stories into its galleries on the Parkway. It is the easiest quirky stop to fit into a downtown day, and it works for every age in the group, from skeptical teens to curious grandparents.
Good to know: Ripley's combo tickets can bundle it with other Gatlinburg attractions.
Closest Vantage cabins: Greystone (5-10 min), Four Bears Den (5-10 min)
View Full Guide →Tennessee Silencer
Tennessee Silencer, out in Seymour, runs a machine gun rental range that is open to the public year-round and a tank driving experience, which is about as far from mini golf as the Smokies get. It also offers free silencer demos across its catalog. It suits adult friend trips and milestone birthdays better than young families.
Good to know: Call or email ahead for quotes and tank bookings.
Closest Vantage cabins: Wheatlands Plantation (15-20 min), Serenity Mountain Pool Lodge (15-20 min)
View Full Guide →Circle Bar T Forge & Blade Works
Circle Bar T is a working forge where you forge your own knife alongside the smiths and take it home as a souvenir. It is hot, loud, hands-on and memorable, a smart pick for the relatives who would rather make something than ride something, and a natural fit for a milestone birthday or a friends' trip.
Good to know: Booking is by phone; check the site for occasional closure days.
Closest Vantage cabins: Pigeon Forge Getaway (5-10 min), Game-N-Getaway (5-10 min)
View Full Guide →Little River Gem Mine
Little River is a family-run rock shop and gem mine with an old mining-town yard full of unusual, sometimes bizarre statues. Buy a bucket, sift it at the water-powered flume and keep everything you find, then feed a geode into the cracking machine and let the owners tell you what you've got.
Good to know: Open daily 9 AM-5 PM on Winfield Dunn Parkway in Sevierville.
Closest Vantage cabins: Wheatlands Plantation (10-15 min), Carpenters Splashin Paradise - Waterpark (15-20 min)

Parrot Mountain is the rare attraction where the exhibits come to you: hundreds of tropical birds, from lories to toucans, in walk-through aviaries and open-perch gardens on about four acres. Hand-feed some species with nectar cups, pose for photos with perched birds and hold young birds in the nursery.
Good to know: Plan at least two hours; there's also a prayer garden on the grounds.
Closest Vantage cabins: Smoky Bear Lodge with Guest House (10-15 min), Sunrise Splash (10-15 min)

Tips for Groups
- Group quirky stops by town. The Salt & Pepper Shaker Museum, Hillbilly Golf and Ripley's are in Gatlinburg; Goats on the Roof, Parrot Mountain and Circle Bar T are around Pigeon Forge; the llama treks are out in Cosby.
- Several of these are small operations with short hours or advance booking, so reserve before driving out, especially for the llama treks, Circle Bar T and Tennessee Silencer.
- Budget a little for the extras, like goat feed, nectar cups and a pair of souvenir shakers. They are where the best photos and inside jokes of the trip come from.
