Agnes' Appalachian Gems is a family-run rock and crystal shop in Buckhorn Village, part of Gatlinburg's Arts and Crafts District about a quarter mile off US 321. Owners Agnes and Riley started the business in a basement before moving to their current shop, and their motto is that every rock has a story to tell. It is a relaxed, hands-on stop that works well for curious kids and serious collectors alike.
The shop cuts and polishes stones to show off their natural color and pattern, and it stocks polished gemstones, rough rocks and crystals sourced both locally and from around the world. An art gallery, pottery and handmade knives round out the shelves. For children, the highlight is the indoor pirate gem mine, which is heated and air-conditioned. Guests pick a bucket and sift for ruby, sapphire and emerald finds, and staff help identify what turns up.
Agnes' Appalachian Gems is at 220 Buckhorn Road in Buckhorn Village. Summer hours run 10 AM to 7 PM on Monday and Thursday through Saturday, 10 AM to 6 PM Tuesday and Wednesday, and 10 AM to 5 PM on Sunday; hours may change outside summer, so call (865) 325-8894 before visiting. Because the mine is indoors and climate-controlled, it is a dependable plan for a rainy or cold afternoon.
