A guided trail ride is one of the few outings that works for nearly every age in a big group, and several stables near Pigeon Forge and Sevierville ride real mountain trails. For grandparents and little ones, carriage and hay rides cover the scenery at a slower pace, and at Cades Cove they come with no age or weight limits.
Each stable sets its own rules, usually a minimum age of 5 or 6 and a weight limit between 270 and 300 pounds, so check before you book. Wear closed-toe shoes and long pants, and expect to sign a waiver on arrival.

Cades Cove Riding Stables
The only horseback stable inside the national park runs one-hour guided trail rides through Cades Cove for riders 6 and up, plus 30- to 45-minute horse-drawn carriage rides with no age or weight limits. It also runs tractor-pulled hayrides on Cades Cove Loop Road that hold up to 55 people, a natural fit for a family reunion.
Good to know: Some ride times are reservable online; the rest are held for walk-ins.

Big Rock Dude Ranch at Ponderosa
Big Rock bills its ride as a real mountain trail: about an hour on a 3.5-mile route up into the hills with views of the Smokies. Loading ramps mean nobody has to haul themselves into the saddle, and riders must be at least 5. A free petting zoo, gem mining and a stocked pond help fill any wait.
Good to know: No reservations; walk-ins only, so arrive early to avoid a wait.

Five Oaks Riding Stables
Across the Parkway from Tanger Outlets, Five Oaks runs guided one-hour, 3.5-mile trail rides past streams and mountain views for riders 6 and up. Children 3 to 5 can ride double with a paying adult, and the stable builds custom outings for groups of 20 or more, including zipline and horseback combinations.
Good to know: Weight limit is 270 pounds, lowered to 225 in wet conditions.

This 250-acre ranch runs hour-long rides on its own mountain trails, with views toward Mount LeConte and as far as North Carolina. Riders 5 and up get their own horse, children 4 and under can ride double with an adult, and draft horses allow riders up to 280 pounds. ATV rides, ziplines and animal encounters make it an easy full day.
Good to know: Walk-ins welcome, but booking ahead secures slots for a large group.

Heritage Carriage Rides
For an evening in town, Heritage Carriage Rides offers horse-drawn rides of about 15 minutes through Pigeon Forge, picking up at the Lumberjack Feud show. Regular rides are first come, first served, with a per-rider rate for parties of three or more, and a romance package for couples needs a reservation. It makes a sweet after-dinner stop.

Tips for Groups
- Plan around group size. Cades Cove guides lead up to nine riders at a time and ask larger groups to call, while Five Oaks builds custom outings for groups of 20 or more.
- Dress for the saddle: closed-toe shoes with a small heel, long pants and no backpacks or loose hats. Cades Cove provides helmets and requires them for young riders.
- Split the day by age. Kids too young to ride alone can take the Cades Cove carriage or hayride, or ride double with an adult at Five Oaks or Jayell Ranch.
