Tips and Getting There

Insider Tips

  • Biltmore is a full-day destination on its own; 8,000 acres, the house tour, gardens, winery, and restaurants. Buy tickets online to skip the gate line.
  • Max Patch is a 2-mile round trip hike to a bald summit with 360-degree views. One of the most accessible and spectacular hikes in the region. Arrive early on fall weekends; the parking lot fills fast.
  • The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad in Bryson City is one of the most unique experiences in the region; a vintage train through a mountain gorge. The Nantahala Gorge excursion is the best route.

Getting There and Parking

All day trips use I-40 or US-441. Gas up before leaving Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge; mountain roads have few stations. Check road conditions in winter on the TN and NC DOT websites.
